Asia–Europe meeting times that actually overlap
Asia–Europe collaboration often has a healthier timezone overlap than Asia–US West — yet teams still schedule “global” calls on California time and wonder why Taipei is online at midnight. Use this playbook with Meridian’s free timezone overlap tool before you lock a recurring slot.
Why Asia–Europe beats Asia–US West for live calls
Taiwan, Japan, and China stay on fixed offsets year-round. Much of Europe shifts between standard time and daylight saving. Even so, late Asia morning / early Europe morning usually beats forcing a Pacific afternoon that lands after midnight in East Asia.
- Taipei (UTC+8) ↔ London — look near 16:00–18:00 Taipei / 08:00–10:00 UK in winter; re-check when the UK moves to BST.
- Tokyo (UTC+9) ↔ Berlin — similar pattern: Asia late afternoon vs Europe morning.
- Singapore (UTC+8) ↔ London — same backbone as Taipei↔London for most office-hour assumptions.
These windows assume roughly 09:00–18:00 local. Stretch Europe’s start to 08:00 or Asia’s end to 19:00 and the shared band widens quickly.
Daylight saving: Asia stays put, Europe moves
When the UK or EU springs forward, the local Asia clock that matches “9am London” shifts by an hour.
Do not keep a recurring calendar row labeled “every Tuesday 5pm Taipei = 9am UK” without re-validating after the change.
In Meridian, keep Asia/Taipei + Europe/London (or Europe/Berlin) and drag again after the transition —
the tool applies IANA rules so you are not doing mental UTC math.
Three-region teams (Asia + Europe + US)
Adding US West often destroys the shared green band. Prefer:
- Live sync for Asia–Europe or Europe–US pairs
- Async updates (recorded demos, written decisions) for the region that would meet at 1am
- Rotating “pain slots” only for true all-hands, not weekly standups
If your other half is US–UK heavy, also read the US–UK timezone overlap guide.
Setup checklist in Meridian
- Open the planner and add Taipei (or Tokyo / Singapore) plus London or Berlin.
- Optionally add a third city only if you truly need it on the live call.
- Set work hours that match culture — many Asia engineering teams run later than 17:00.
- Drag until the overlap banner shows a usable shared window.
- Copy the invite or share link so every locale sees the same UTC moment.
Quick decision rule
If the green band is under 45 minutes for a three-city stack, cut a city or switch that meeting to async. A timezone overlap tool should make “no good slot” obvious — not guilt your team into a midnight standup.
